Moving Regulations - Uruguay

Uruguay does not require an entry visa for citizens of Australia. After entering the country they may stay there for 90 days. This period can be extended for another 90 days through a written request to the immigration authority. Before that period expires, the person will formally file the request for residency. From the moment a person applies for residency, he or she may stay in Uruguay indefinitely, and even request a temporary national identification (“cedula de identidad”).

After filing for residency, the applicant does not need to stay in Uruguay, but should enter the country before the granting of the residency. On average, six to twelve months after the initial filing, residency is granted. If after obtaining it a person does not enter the country at all for 3 years resident status will be lost.

Once you have permanent residency, you can get clearance to bring your household goods into Uruguay duty free when you move. It is not obligatory to wait until residency is granted, you can still ship your goods, but you will have to leave a guarantee with customs. Please, pay attention that household goods do not include a car. The alternative way is to enter the goods after residency has been granted. It is not recommendable because it requires extra documentation.
