Moving Regulations - Norway

If you wish to relocate to Norway, you need to apply for a residence permit. In addition to this you must also apply for a work permit if you want to work while you are in Norway. There are different types of residence permit. Each of them has different requirements.

If you intend to obtain a settlement permit, you must as a general rule have lived in Norway for 3 consecutive years. During these 3 years, you must have held a type of residence or work permit which constitutes grounds for a settlement permit.

In order to obtain a settlement permit, the terms under which the original work or residence permit was granted must continue to be met. If you have held a work permit as a skilled worker for a period of three years, you may apply for a settlement permit. Provided that you have worked in Norway continuously for three years a change of employer will not interrupt this period. If you have been granted a settlement permit once, you cannot lose it, even if the grounds for the original permit no longer pertain.
