Moving Regulations – Mexico

If you plan to relocate to Mexico in order to work there, you need apply for working visa. It is essential to obtain a job in Mexico before applying for a work permit. To obtain the appropriate immigration documents the prospective employer in Mexico must apply directly to the National Institute of Immigration. As a rule, the process of obtaining a working visa can be long. In the case if the working permit is granted, the National Institute of Immigration will then advise about immigration fees. Without authorisation from Mexico's National Institute of Immigration the Embassy cannot issue working visas.

If you want to move to Mexico for retirement, you have to apply for the corresponding visa.  It is for people not working in Mexico but living out of funds coming from overseas.
 
The following documents must be submitted: 
• Valid Australian passport with a photocopy of the page with the bearer’s personal data, photo and signature.
• Visa application form.
• 5 colour passport photos with white background (3 front view photos and 2 side-on photos).
• Proof of international health coverage.
• Health Certificate issued by the family doctor stating that the applicant is free of contagious diseases.
• Letter from the Police Department stating that the applicant has no police record.
• Letter from the bank or financial institution which must state the source of your monthly income. The letter must also inform how the money is going to become available to the applicant while in Mexico.
Please enquire about the current consular fee before submitting your documents. Pay the consular fee either with cash or money order because personal checks and credit cards are not accepted.
 
Requirements for import of household goods and personal effects: 
• Original passport and 6 copies of the page with your personal data, photo and signature.
• Letter addressed to the Embassy requesting permission to import household goods into Mexico. It must specify both your Australian address and the address you will have in Mexico.
• Original visa and 6 copies of it must be attached.
• All household goods must be listed in Spanish and typed in single space on white paper.
• The original list and 5 copies (all signed in original) must be sent to the Embassy to get the visa.
• Each page of your original list must be signed in blue ink on the bottom, right-hand corner.
• Each item must be numbered on a separate line, beginning with the electrical appliances, specifying make, model and serial number (including kitchen appliances).
• Small articles packed in boxes must be described and numbered in the list as one box containing clothing, kitchen utensils, etc.
• Pay the consular fee either with cash or money order as personal checks and credit cards are not accepted.
