Import Regulations – Tonga Islands

Non-tariff barriers
Most goods are imported under Open General Licence.

All pharmaceuticals must secure a prior written confirmation from the Ministry of Health before other appropriate authorisation is granted.

An import permit must be obtained when importing fertilisers and other agricultural chemicals.

Imports of motor vehicles (including cycles and scooters) require an import licence issued by the Ministry of Labour, Commerce and Industries. Left-hand drive vehicles require prior permission from the Traffic Department of the Ministry of Police.

The following items are restricted: brandy and whisky unless certified to the satisfaction of the Collector that it has been matured in wood for three years; eggs except with a licence issued by the Minister of Finance.

Labeling and Packaging
It is important to notice that outer package should bear the consignee's mark and port mark. It also should be numbered (to accord with the packing list) unless their contents can be otherwise readily identified.

Packaging
There are no special packing requirements but goods should be securely packed to withstand possible rough handling and humid conditions.

Special certificates
There are also special certificates that must be obtained when importing certain goods. They are phytosanitary certificates that must accompany plants and plant materials; sanitary certificates.
