Import Regulations – Nepal

In 2007-2008 two-way merchandise trade totalled A$ 22 million with exports to Nepal valued at A$18 million. Australia’s main exports to Nepal are vegetables and animal oils, fats, non-monetary gold, telecommunications equipment and parts. Main imports are hand-made carpets and pashmina shawls. In Nepal prevailing customs duty rates vary from item to item and can range from zero per cent to 130 per cent.

The following goods are banned from import into Nepal at all:
• beef and beef products;
• valuable metals and jewellery (except permitted under bag and baggage regulations);
• products injurious to health, including narcotic drugs and liquor containing more than 60 per cent alcohol;
• communications equipment (except under import license of His Majesty's Government);
• arms, ammunition and explosives (except under import license of His Majesty's Government).

Product certification
Spirits may need a certificate of maturity. Port wine requires a certificate indicating alcoholic content. Livestock imports must be accompanied by a sanitary certificate issued by an approved authority in Australia and must be certified by an approved organization. Plants, plant products and leaf tobacco require phytosanitary certificates.

Documentary requirements
Commercial invoice has no prescribed form. Not less than 6 copies are required. The invoice must show the following details:
• country of origin;
• name and address of exporter and consignee;
• delivery address;
• number of packages and description of contents packages;
• transport details;
• terms of delivery and payment;
• buyer's name and address (if other than importer);
• shipping marks (container no.).
3 copies of certificate of origin are usually required. Minimum of 3 original copies is required. Freight charges can be prepaid or payable at destination (CIF or FOB). Besides, it is compulsory to make up packing list.
