Import Regulations - Cyprus

Trade between Australia and Cyprus is small, due to distance, lack of direct freight linkages, and the small size of the product market for Australian exporters. Cyprus accession to the European Union also resulted in loss of markets for lamb and beef. But still, Australia has successfully established a foothold in such niche markets as wine, processed food products and pharmaceuticals.

Import tariffs and non-tariff barriers
The majority of goods may be imported under an open general licence. Some articles require special licences, which are issued by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.

Labelling and packaging requirements
All prepackaged processed food products must have an expiration date. Packing of hay and straw is banned unless supplemented with an official certificate issued by the respective authorities in the country of origin, stating that territories of origin or transit are free from foot and mouth disease or the packing has been thoroughly disinfected with a bactericide.

The country of origin has to be clearly and indelibly marked on all imported goods. Otherwise, usual commercial practice applies. Food products must be marked with the name of the producer, the ingredients and the net weight.

Fertilisers have to be packed in closely woven sacks. The sacks must be specifically marked to show clearly and legibly the name and address of the importer, the country of production, and the percentage of nitrogen, phosphate and potash when reduced to soluble form.
Import documentation: commercial invoice; bill of lading (airway bill); packing list.
